I tend to cringe a bit when I hear people say that muscle weights more than fat. One pound of bricks is going to weigh the same as one pound of feathers. One pound of muscle = one pound of fat. A pound is a pound no matter what you are comparing.
Muscle is more metabolically active than fat; meaning that it burns more calories at rest than fat does, and muscle is much more dense than fat and occupies less space.
Exercise such as strength training will help to build muscle, which encourages fat loss by increasing your resting metabolism so you can burn more calories throughout the day. To get a lean look, you need to build muscle through weight training while simultaneously losing fat—but one doesn’t magically become the other.
Some of the benefits of having more lean muscle mass in your body will:
- Create a leaner physique
- Reduce your risk of injury
- Increase strength, stability, power and endurance
- Improve balance and mobility
- Improve confidence
- Increase energy and vitality
- Enhance athletic performance
- Create metabolic reserve in times of traumas such as (car accidents and burns)
- Increase your metabolic efficiency
- Improve insulin sensitivity and improve blood glucose control
So how do you continue to burn fat and gain lean muscle?
Keeping your nutrition on point! Eating small, healthy meals more often revs up your metabolism by keeping your digestive system working. Resistance training will burn fat and build muscle! You should also be drinking plenty of water. Half of you body weight in ounces per day should be your goal.
I also wanted to share this photo. This is me. My weight is the exact same in both photos. The photo taken in January is before I started The Master’s Hammer & Chisel program, and the photo taken just 10 days ago is 4 weeks into Beachbody’s newest program 22 Minute Hard Corps by Tony Horton. Weight and resistance training paired with cardio and clean eating!
So when you are getting discouraged that the scale isn’t changing – throw it AWAY!
Focus on your strength, endurance, how your clothes fit, look in the mirror! Take those before and after photos to gage your progress and stop obsessing over number that mean nothing!
